In 2024, Europe is set to experience a significant surge in pilgrimage tourism, with an estimated 100 million visitors expected to travel across the continent. The most notable events contributing to this record number are the grand reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and the Vatican’s year-long Jubilee of Hope celebrations, which will begin on Christmas Day.
The project, which has spanned five years, involved cutting down over 1,000 oak trees from 200 French forests to replace the wooden frame of the cathedral's roof and spire. A staggering 450,000 square feet of limestone was meticulously cleaned to remove centuries of grime, ash, and lead dust. While the exterior restoration, including the renovation of the flying buttresses, continues, the majority of the internal restoration is now complete.
