Canada Pledges $13.4 Million for Net-Zero Research Facility on Sunshine Coast

The Canadian government is investing over $13.4 million to transform the Sunshine Coast with the creation of the Pender Harbour Ocean Discovery Station (PODS), a state-of-the-art net-zero facility. This project is a collaboration between the Loon Foundation and the shíshálh Nation, combining shíshálh traditional knowledge, western science, and local culture to promote environmental stewardship and celebrate the region's rich biodiversity.

Set to open in Spring 2027, the new PODS facility will showcase cutting-edge green building technology and serve as a model of sustainability and accessibility. The facility will feature interactive exhibits, laboratories, galleries, and performance spaces, creating a vibrant hub for aquatic research, community engagement, and cultural programming. Through courses and public events, PODS aims to inspire environmental stewardship and deepen appreciation for the natural world.
